Smoke Sales for Soldiers Could Be Headed Out

A Pentagon plan to end tobacco product sales at commissaries and post or Naval exchanges has some pretty strong opposition.  The Pentagon says the result would be a healthier military -- soldiers who are in better shape.  Retired Army Major General Bill McClain says there might be a better way to accomplish the same goal.

“What perhaps they could better be speaking to is not having the tax advantage,” McClain explains.  “You know, there's a pretty sizeable tax advantage to buying cigarettes in the commissary or post or Naval exchanges.”

General McClain says soldiers should have the freedom to choose what they use.

“Some people make good choices, some not so good,” he says, But you should have freedom to make that choice.”
