MERS may be worse than SARS

It's called "Middle East Respiratory Syndrome" or MERS. Some say it's deadlier than SARS.  And Houston may be at particular risk because of the energy industry's frequent contact with the Middle East.

Dr. Joseph McCormick is regional dean of The University of Texas School of Public Health

"It causes fever, cough, shortness of breath and often they have diarrhea."

Dr. McCormick says it may affect three large groups of Texans in particular.

"The markedly obese, people with diabetes and pregnant women. Those were three of the groups that were most at risk for even for H1N1 -- which is a completely unrelated virus by the way."

Dr. McCormick says it appears the virus originated in bats and it's now spread person to person. But he knows of no Texas cases yet.
