We are almost at the start of August, prime time for tropical activity, and it's closer than you might think.
Tropical Depression Eight formed in the Gulf of Mexico last night, and has its eyes on a Texas landfall. Richard Pasch with the National Hurricane Center tells KTRH this could turn into Tropical Storm Hanna.
"It could become a tropical storm later tonight or tomorrow," Pasch said. "It's not a very organized system, so we don't expect significant amounts of strengthening. It could become a tropical storm before reaching the coast of Texas."
Parts of the Greater Houston Area are under a Tropical Storm Watch. This includes coastal Brazoria and Galveston counties. Pasch says this storm is going to be a rainmaker.
"We don't think this is a big wind event. We could get some flooding from the heavy rains," Pasch said.
So how much rain are we in for, and what is the timing of all of this?
"Three to five inches with locally higher amounts up to about eight inches is what the prediction center is calling for," Pasch told KTRH News. The rain will start late tomorrow and last through Saturday.
