Paxton Requests Investigative Power of Deadly Police Misconduct

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton says he plans to ask the state Legislature to give him the power to investigate and prosecute deadly police misconduct.

In an opinion piece submitted to an Austin newspaper on Thursday, Paxton said local prosecutors often have conflicts of interest when they look into the actions of officers they work with in the criminal justice system.

He said local authorities need to be accountable and transparent when dealing with officer-involved deaths, and he believes state oversight can help bring that about.
