Texas Republican incumbents not getting complacent

Texas Republican Congressmen are taking their 2020 opposition seriously after what happened in the midterms last year.

Four of the six Republicans being targeted by Democrats out-raised their challengers in the second quarter of this year. SMU political scientist Cal Jillson tells KTRH Democrats have a shot to gain more ground in Texas.

“2018 was a year that Democrats made significant gains. 2020 is unstable for Republicans and they know it,” Jillson said.

Of the two Republicans that were out-raised by their opponents, one is from The Houston area. Sugar Land’s Pete Olson is in a tough matchup with Democrat Sri Kulkarni. GOP strategist Matt Mackowiak explains why.

“Olson was in a closer race last cycle than he’s ever been in. To a certain extent that was due to demographic changes in his district, but it was also a very bad year for Republicans,” Mackowiak explained.

Jillson sees that race as being similar to the one that saw John Culberson lose his seat to Democrat Lizzie Fletcher last year.
