Tropical development chances at 90%; Houston in forecast cone

The weather system forecasters have been monitoring all week long known as ‘Invest 92L’ is now in the Gulf of Mexico, where forecasters are now giving it a 90% chance of development.

The question is where the system will go once it develops into ‘Barry.’ Francisco Sanchez with the Harris County Office of Emergency Management told KTRH it might be more than 24 hours before we have the answer to that question.

“We probably not have any significant confidence in that forecast until Thursday midday or Thursday afternoon,” Sanchez said. “It’s not until the system gets a defined center that will actually help to steer the storm that we’ll actually have a clear idea.”

And he says that presents a problem because that may not give people a lot of time to prepare if the system tracks towards our area.

“We are now monitoring this 24/7 with our team,” Sanchez explained. “We can plan and prepare as much as possible, but the single most important thing that is going to make us able to safely respond to a disaster is people being personally prepared.”

Hurricane hunters will be flying into the system this afternoon, and that may also help to determine what will go on with this system.
