Is the Web an out of control Monster?

The inventors of two of the most important technologies of the 21st century are still alive. The man who invented the cell in 'cell phone' is 90 and Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web thirty years ago this week is in his 60s. But Berners-Lee has soured a bit on his invention, saying it's been 'hijacked by crooks.'

Tim Berners-Lee envisioned a high-minded communication tool for scientists and universities, but now too much of the web is porn.

"I don't think it is run by crooks and idiots; I do think there are some things on the Internet that Berners-Lee never meant to be on there, though."

High Tech Texan Michael Garfield says any attempt to police the web will be censorship.

"The reason why the Internet really took off, especially in the early part of this century, is because we, you, me and everybody were able to publish and post our thoughts where we could determine the content."

Garf says despite all the fake news and scams, it doesn't amount to a crisis.

"It's still in its infancy -- remember that. Television, newspapers have been for decades -- over a century almost as we know them -- and the Internet as we know it -- we're still trying to define what it is and what laws are there to run and govern it."

Berners-Lee has called for a new "Contract for the Web," based on access for all and the right to privacy, among other things.
