(New York, NY) -- Starting today, a new law goes into effect giving New York City residents a third gender category to choose from on birth certificates.
The document that shows male and female will also now have the letter X. The de Blasio administration says this allows people who don't identify with male or female to have an option that more accurately reflects their identity.
The law also makes it easier for transgender people to change their birth certificates.
