El Niño Says, “You will have a Wet Winter!”

El Niño is back and could mean a wet winter.  El Niño occurs when a flow of unusually warm surface water from the Pacific Ocean disrupts typical weather patterns.

And why is that important to you? Texas State Climatologist  John Nielsen-Gammon explains:  “It changes the odds of temperatures and precipitation during the cooler months of the year in Southeast Texas.”

And how does it do that? “IT tends to bring the Jet Stream farther south – closer to the Tropics. And that puts us more in the path of winter storms so we get more rain – and possibly even snow!” Nielsen-Gammon isn’t sure if we'll see much change in temperatures from the usual, though.
