NWS issues flash flood watch

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for portions of The Houston area through tomorrow morning.

Thunderstorms may develop along the coast or just off the coast this morning and may pop up farther inland this afternoon between the coast and Interstate 10. A second round of thunderstorm could develop overnight into Tuesday morning.

The main concern with these storms will be the rainfall rate, and not so much the total rainfall amounts. Storms yesterday produced rates of two inches an hour, and atmospheric conditions are favorable now to produce similar rainfall rates if not more. Flash flooding could occur if those rates persist for more than an hour or two over the same area.

The main impact will be street flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas. Rapid rises in area creeks and bayous can be expected.
