Two women killed while trying to rescue dog in Dickinson

A Friendswood man has been charged in connection with the deaths of two women Sunday, after hitting them with his vehicle as they tried to save a dog stranded in the middle of F.M. Road 517 in Dickenson, near Houston Avenue.

Police say Fernando Octaviani, 36, struck the women and the dog, killing all three.

According to authorities, Linda Kirkland, 69, and Martha Arvidsson, 66, had parked their vehicles at the roadside with their emergency lights on, then tried to round up the dog.

Octaviani showed no signs of intoxication, officials said, but was charged with having an invalid driver license and failing to produce proof of insurance.

Kirkland was reportedly a longtime volunteer with Southern Comforts Animal Rescue.
