Houston Man Accused of Monument Bombing Plot

A Houston man faces federal prison time after authorities say he was caught plotting to grow up a Civil War statue in Houston's Hermann Park.

Andrew Schneck, 25, is charged with attempting to damage or destroy property that gets federal financial assistance.

The suspect's alleged target was the 112-year-old statue of Dick Dowling -- a Confederate lieutenant  who led a successful effort to repel a Union attack at Sabine Pass in 1863.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says a park officials saw Schneck in bushes surrounding the monument -- with a timing device, wires, duct tape and other items.

Schneck is accused of having nitroglycerin and HMTD, according to the charges. HMTD is an explosive compound and nitroglycerin is used to make explosives.

If convicted, Schneck faces up to 40 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

The FBI and Houston Police Department are investigating.
