House Majority Whip Steve Scalise - a Republican from New Orleans - is shot and wounded when a man with a rifle opened fire on a suburban Washington DC park.
There were early reports that Texas Congressman Roger Williams was also wounded, but his office denied the report. One of his aides is among the wounded. Williams represents the 25th Congressional District, which runs from Austin to Fort Worth.
Witnesses call it a 'deliberate attack'. Lawmakers had gathered for an early morning baseball practice at Simpson Field in Alexandria. The Republicans and Democrats plan an annual game as a measure of goodwill. The game was scheduled for tomorrow.
Houston-area Congressman Kevin Brady and Texas lawmaker Joe Barton were also at the practice. Neither was hurt.
The story is still developing. Police in Alexandria say as many as five people suffered non-life threatening injuries. Scalise was reportedly shot in the hip.
Fox News reports the gunman was shot by U.S. Capitol Police, apprehended, and taken to the George Washington University Hospital.
There is no word on a motive.
President Donald Trump said in a statement, "The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected."
