The Trump administration is working on a plan to add people and resources to build up a nationwide deportation force and defend the southern U.S. border.
The proposal would add 10,000 ICE officers and 5,000 more border agents. In some cases, current testing standards would be eased in order to make the additional hires.
Immigration experts such as Hans von Spakovsky of the Heritage Foundation agree that it will take more than just building a wall to fix the problem – and that the next step is deporting the thousands of illegals who are already here.
The Department of Homeland Security has already located thousands of extra beds for new detainees and started conversations with certain police departments about possible joint efforts.
The nine-figure pricetag, however, remains the issue. It's unclear if Congress – despite its GOP control – would fully fund it.
