Mayor: Wounded HPD Officer May Be Paralyzed

One of the two HPD officers shot Tuesday after a confrontation with a pair of burglary suspects is expected to be released later today.

However, the other office may be paralyzed, Mayor Sylvester Turner says.

Officer Jose Munoz was hit in the leg and is expected to fully recover. He has been receiving treatment at Ben Taub Hospital in the Texas Medical Center.

Meanwhile, Officer Ronny Cortez will remain at Memorial Hermann Hospital with a bullet lodged near his spinal column.

According to Ray Hunt of the Houston Police Officers Union, Cortez was wearing a bulletproof vest, but the bullet still struck Cortez beneath the vest.

At Wednesday's Houston City Council meeting, the mayor asked for prayers for all police officers – and during his update on the injured officers said that Cortez may have suffered paralysis.

One of the burglary suspects is still at large. The other suspect was shot dead by police.
