A study shows 150,000 kids are homeschooled in Texas alone.
A study by the National Center for Education Statistics shows that the number of parents homeschooling their children has increased by 74 percent since 1999. The research shows that about three percent of all kids are now homeschooled.
"A lot of families want to integrate their faith or values with the education of their children. Obviously, you can do that better in a home setting," says Tim Lambert, the president of the Texas Home School Coalition. "From an academic standpoint, you have one-on-one instruction."
Some parents say their school districts are trying to intimidate them.
"They'll say to a family, 'You need to bring your curriculum in and have it approved by the superintendent,' and that's not true," says Chris Klicka, the senior counsel for the Home School Legal Defense Association. "You've got some families that let the districts know that they're homeschooling and a couple weeks later, they get a truancy notice."
Statistics show that about 150,000 kids are homeschooled in Texas.
