Businesses Along Galveston Bay Still Cleaning up from Ike
Many shops along the Kemah Boardwalk hope to reopen this Spring.

Hurricane Ike struck almost four months ago, but many businesses along Galveston Bay are still struggling to reopen. Some restaurants at the Kemah Boardwalk have already opened, but others say they will remain closed until Spring.

"I think that's the best case scenario," says John Oliver, the Chairman of the North Galveston County Chamber of Commerce. "I don't see that happening in a lot of the areas along the bay. Bacliff, San Leon and those areas are going to take a lot longer than that."

Oliver says shop owners are still waiting on federal money to pay for reconstruction. He says businesses are also struggling to attract tourists back to the region.

"They're having to stretch out their advertising trying to get people down there," Oliver adds. "Most of the people down there are trying to repair their homes and get on with their own lives."
