2:20PM EST November 6. 2012 - CHICAGO —Turns out President Obama's team is doing some Election Day campaigning, courtesy of Vice President Biden.
The veep made an unannounced stop at Landmark Restaurant in Cleveland, perhaps to offset Republican Mitt Romney's last-day appearances in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Biden, with his wife, daughter Ashley and two granddaughters, ambled into the Greek diner, mingling with people in the Democratic stronghold of Cuyahoga County, an area where Obama needs strong turnout if he wants to win Ohio.
One diner posed what's becoming a popular query of Biden: What is he going to do in 2016?
"Oh, I'm going to go back home and run for county council or something," Biden responded.
Biden posed for plenty of pictures and shook hands during the quick stop before heading back to the airport. Biden was en route to Chicago, where he will join Obama at an evening rally in Chicago, when the White House announced he was making a pit stop in Cleveland.
Biden's surprise visit came hours after Obama strategist David Axelrod said the Romney team's last-minute campaigning today in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia suggests it know it's in trouble.
"I can't speak for our opponents and why they don't think that's important, but I suspect they feel like they're in some degree of trouble, and therefore, they want to get their candidate out there for some frantic last-minute appeal," Axelrod said in an interview with Denver's KTVD.
Romney running mate Paul Ryan is also in northern Ohio, creating an interesting situation at the Cleveland airport, according to a pool report:
"VPOTUS and other Bidens descended steps from Air Force Two at 11:49 a.m. To the right side of the plane, pool could see the Romney campaign plane a couple hundred yards away.
"And as motorcade began rolling at 11:52 a.m., the Ryan campaign plane was landing. Quite the convergence on Election Day."
