The #1 most-downloaded free app for 2013 is one called Candy Crush Saga -- with more than a half-billion downloads. High-Tech Texan Michael Garfield says apps are here to stay.
“If you count up the apps on the marketplace right now, it's into the millions,” Garfield says. “What says is, these apps are going to be here. If you think about it, more of us are getting mobile. We all have the smart phones, we all have the tablets.”
Communication apps like Instagram and Vine are growing rapidly. New apps are designed to work on Apple's iOS first, but there are plenty of choices for androids, too.
Why is the industry exploding?
“We have a lot of free time on our hands and we're very bored, and we like to be entertained,” he says. “And, obviously, if you're riding the subway or sitting there waiting for a bus or waiting, why not just download one of these games and generally they're free. That's why they are so popular.”
