Thousands of delegates to the annual Southern Baptist Convention will fill Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center, starting tomorrow.
The nation’s largest protestant denomination started taking over the downtown area over the weekend with a few activities. Its executive committee has been meeting this afternoon.
No agenda for the meetings has been released, though the group’s leadership is suggesting there will be at least one resolution going to a vote acknowledging the threat to religious liberties created by federal policies on contraception and gays in the military.
The theme for the two-day annual event is “Revive us, that we may be one.”
Southern Baptists have 16 million members. Each church was allowed to send 10 delegates to the 2013 gathering in Houston.
Next year’s convention is to be held in Baltimore. The meeting returns to Texas when it is held in Dallas in five years.
