U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) says his amendment would improve the immigration reform legislation being considered right now in the Judiciary Committee. He says it would make the bill more likely to earn congressional approval.
“It builds on the framework that was created by the Gang of 8 immigration bill,” the Texas Republican says.
Cornyn’s amendment calls for 100 percent situational awareness on the southern border and what he calls “full operational control.”
“That would be defined,” he explains, “as at least a 90 percent apprehension rate for people attempting to come across the border illegally.”
He says the “Cornyn Results Border Security Amendment” is not a poison pill to kill the reform.
“This is an opportunity for us to strengthen border security, national security and public safety,” he says, “in the process of reforming our immigration laws.”
