The latest edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s list of mental disorders includes caffeine intoxication and caffeine withdrawal.
“Ludicrous,” says Houston clinical and forensic psychiatrist Dr. Seth Silverman. “It’s either unconsciously or consciously an attempt to make normal behavior into abnormal behavior.”
The change is reflected in the fifth edition of the APA’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual.
The reasons could be simple.
“You can diagnose more people,” Dr. Silverman explains. “You can treat more people, you can give more drugs – you don’t have to address the behavior itself – and you can make more money that way.”
