"What is up are fees. You're paying fees for a lot more things that you weren't paying last year and certainly more than you were paying, say, five years ago."
Banks says you may not be able to avoid a high fare, but you can lessen your chance of airport delays.
"Try and schedule a morning flight as opposed to a later in the day flight because typically speaking the later in the day you go the more apt you are to have a delay, especially with the type of weather we have this time of year."
Banks also says go ahead and pay more for a direct flight. She says the more stops you have, the greater the chance for weather and other delays.
But Banks doesn't buy some of the tips other experts offer. For example, she says the notion flights are cheapest Tuesday through Thursday is a myth. Banks says there's a lot of competition for those seats and the fares actually rise.
