Airfare is down 2% for domestic flights and is down 1% on international travel. That’s great news if you haven’t booked your flight for a Memorial Day weekend getaway.
Courtney Scott is Senior Editor for Travelocity and told KTRH, “You can expect to pay an average cost of $341 for a domestic round-trip ticket. That’s $6.oo less than it was in 2012, and while that doesn’t seem like a ton, airfare in years past had really been on an upward trend, so this is good news for the summer season.”
Scott says the best travel tip she can offer is to book as far ahead as you can. “If you see a deal, book it. Don’t wait and hold out for something that could potentially be a few dollars cheaper. We’re in that tight period where we’re almost in the month of May and it’s important to book you find that deal.”
Denver is a very popular Memorial Day weekend vacation spot for Texans, Scott said, according to analysis of data from the Travelocity website. Boston is also.
“Denver is a great value to do during the early summer season. People tend to overlook Denver as a winter ski season spot, but Texans certainly don’t. They love going to Denver, and you can expect to pay about $291 for round-trip airfare, which is well under the national average.”
Linda DeSosa, Vice President of Woodlake Travel in the Galleria area, warns that flights to Europe have become very expensive in recent years. “We’re seeing fares to Europe for $1,600 to $2,000,” she told KTRH. “Which is ridiculous. They’ve added a lot of fuel surcharges. $700 in a recent airfare ticket went to paying a fuel surcharge and taxes. And on a business class fare it’s $900.”
DoSosa’s recommendation for summer vacation travel is a cruise, even with the cost of flight to Europe. She says it’s a good way to keep your costs down because paying for it in US dollars and you know what the prices are going to be up front. River cruises, she told KTRH, up the Danube or the Rhine are very popular. She also says the Baltic cruises to Scandinavian countries are highly recommended. Among the lines DeSosa suggests are Waterways, Viking, Avalon, Crystal, Regent and Celebrity.
So many choices, so little vacation time.
