Analyst: Trip might be sign for his political future
Texas Governor Rick Perry just got done with another business recruiting trip. The Governor spent the last couple of days in Illinois talking to companies in Chicago.
This latest trip comes just a couple of months after Perry was sweet talking California businesses. He got under California Governor Jerry Brown's skin, and Pat Quinn of Illinois wasn't happy about it either.
“He’s a big talker. He talks all the time. He never stops talking,” Quinn said.
Perry says Quinn should take a page out of his book if he’s upset about the recruiting trip.
“I’d welcome them to come to Texas and compete for businesses,” Perry quipped.
Some Texas political analysts, like Harvey Kronberg of the Quorum Report, say that trips like these are becoming more common. And he thinks this trip gives a clue as to what Perry's political future might be.
“It’s beginning to change the persona of who Rick Perry is and that can only help in three years,” Kronberg explained, pointing towards the 2016 Presidential race.
Kronberg thinks the timing of this is the biggest clue about Perry’s plans.
“What surprises me is that he’s doing this during the last month of the legislative session which is crunch time. It underscores the fact that is intention is not to run for re-election,” Kronberg said.
Kronberg says Perry already knows who he wants his replacement to be.
“I’ve long believed that he and Greg Abbott have long had an agreement that Abbott would succeed him,” Kronberg said.
Perry says the speculation is just that; speculation. And that the only thing on his mind is helping Texas.
“Texas is the number one state in the nation to do business,” Perry stated.
