The comic book world has been living in a universe first imagined over 50 years ago, but DC Comics is bringing their comics into the present.
DC Comics made news last year after revealing the first ever gay superhero in the Green Lantern. Now, they have added the first transgendered character to the Batgirl series. In Batgirl #19, the character Alysia Yeoh reveals that she is a transwoman.
Patty Ramos is a comic book fan along with her two daughters and says the addition of the LGBT characters in comic books is overdue, "This is a new day and age and comic books will always be around, as well as the (gay) lifestyle."
Ramos says she thinks the new characters make for interesting stories which is why people read comic books.
Batwoman, also known as Barbara Gordon in the Batgirl series in also a lesbian.
DC Comic writers Gail Simone says diversity is just an issue for superhero comics, it's the issue. "We have a problem most media don’t have, which is that almost all the tentpoles we build our industry upon were created over a half century ago."
Simone says they can't just build around those old ideas, "then we will look like an episode of The Andy Griffith Show for all eternity.”
