Will Pay Citations For Monthly Fee
Car insurance is required by law, but few have ever heard of ticket insurance. That's the idea behind a new Las Vegas-based company called TicketsBite, which will pay your traffic tickets in exchange for a monthly fee. Christopher Thomas, co-founder and president of the company, tells KTRH they cover nearly all common roadway violations. "Speeding, illegal u-turns, running a red light," he says. "We'll even cover insurance increases if that does happen, and also traffic school fines." TicketsBite also covers DUI citations, but the company does not pay legal fees nor offer legal advice.
Thomas explains the idea behind TicketsBite is to counter the ever-growing cost of traffic citations, which he says now average $380. "Traffic fines are so expensive and they're unexpected, so it's really to prevent a financial hardship that some people have when they do get a ticket." The company's unique concept and business model has raised questions about its legality. Thomas notes TicketsBite is not an insurance company, only "insurance-like." Therefore, it isn't subject to agencies like the Texas Department of Insurance. Beyond that, he is confident the company isn't violating any laws. "There's no case law in what we're doing," Thomas says. "So in my terms it's still legal, I mean there's no precedents we can fall back on because it's so new."
The other big question about the business--does it encourage unsafe driving? Thomas says absolutely not. In fact, he points out that the company couldn't stay in business if it was constantly paying out tickets. "(Like any insurance service) we operate on pure statistics, and we have to have a fair number of people who don't get tickets for this to work." Furthermore, he says the company caps each claim at $600, and offers a money-back incentive for drivers who go a year without getting a ticket.
