Many are returning to the use of statins
Statins like Lipitor help control cholesterol readings and can even prevent heart attacks.
Nonetheless, many patients stop using the drugs because they can cause muscle aches.
Methodist Hospital emergency physician Dr. Jeff Kalina says he understands because he stopped using statins.
“People return,” he says, “because these drugs work.
“They are wonderful medications,” says Dr. Kalina, “that come with wonderful physiological effects, but some of the side effects – particularly those muscle aches – are what present problems to some patients.”
Ninety percent of the patients who resume using statins say they realized the benefits of the prescriptions drugs outweigh a few muscle aches.
