Critics say a proposed abortion rule is unnecessary
A proposed Texas House bill would require all abortion providers in Texas to have hospital admission privileges. Supporters say it's too dangerous not to, but critics say it'd be a waste of time and money.
Dr. Ingrid Skop is an OB-GYN in San Antonio. She testified in favor of the bill.
"Sometimes the complications that can come about from an abortion are quite severe; hemorrhage, possibly requiring a transfusion; severe infection."
But Stacy Wilson with the Texas Hospital Association says the provider should only have to let the woman know where to go.
"To ensure that the woman knows where her nearest emergency medical treatment center is so that she can get to the hospital in time in case there are complications."
Wilson says there are horror stories, but there aren't enough to justify this kind of rule.
