Council members say repeal is likely
The critics are many; supporters mostly quiet.
The arrest of a down-on-his-luck military veteran brought the ordinance being questioned into focus. That veteran was ticketed for going to a downtown dumpster looking for food.
A vote to repeal that ordinance is on the agenda for today’s Houston City Council meeting.
“We will be approving a change in that ordinance,” says council member Helena Brown firmly.
Another council member, C.O. “Brad” Bradford agrees. The action today, he says, will be: “To repeal Section 39-2 of the city code of ordinances which concerns disturbing and removing the contents of garbage containers and bins.”
Activists held a news conference yesterday in opposition to the ordinance at City Hall.
