Auctioneer Bonhams cites strong interest
Many of the items up for bid have direct ties to Houston’s Johnson Space Center. There are flight plans, check lists, hundreds of photos and flags which flew in space.
“Pretty much everything in the auction has some link to Johnson,” says Bonhams specialist Matthew Haley, “or to Houston in general, since it was the hub, really, of the space program.”
The auction starts this afternoon at the auction house in New York City. Many of those bidding were growing up while NASA was putting a man on the moon.
“Many of the bidders are the people who were around at the time of the Apollo missions, who were watching it on TV as kids,” Haley says, “but there are also a number of younger collectors.”
High interest may mean high bids. Not only will people in the room be bidding, but Bonhams accepts online bids as well.
