Many trees are already blooming
It won’t be long until peach lovers are lining up at more than two dozen roadside stands in the Hill County near Fredericksburg. Dan Rohrer is owner of Rocky Hill Orchard and past president of the Texas Hill Country Fruit Growers. He says this year’s crop is looking “respectably good” so far.
“With the cooler end of February and that first week of March, that bloom hasn’t come as quickly as most years,” Rohrer says. “Right now, we’re looking at full bloom.”
There are about 35 growers in the region and 27 roadside stands each year. Rohrer says buyers are already calling, checking to make sure before they take some pretty long drives for some. He says about three-fourths of the peaches grown in his area are sold at those stands, at farmers markets or through some kind of subscription service.
Though the drought had an impact, producers used irrigation to maintain their trees.
