160th among Texas counties

Harris County ranked 160th out of the 232 counties in Texas.  Four factors were considered in a study done by the University of Wisconsin.  They looked at health behaviors, clinical care, social and economic factors, and physical environment.  “It’s kind of like an annual checkup, like a visit to the doctor every year….” Explains researcher Kate Konkle.

Konkle says the annual project shows that it is not just one thing that makes us healthy or unhealthy, “It’s a variety of factors, such as tobacco use, physical inactivity and community safety.”

Harris county received good marks for access to recreational facilities but was hurt by the high violent crime rate.
