Partner shoots kills suspect during traffic stop.

One man is dead, an officer is shot during a late night traffic stop in North Houston.

HPD spokesperson Jodi Silva says officer W. Fikes and his partner were attempting to block the suspect in a cul-de-sac on saddlerock.

"Our officer who is out of the car, attempts to approach the car, and gives verbal commands to the suspect to get out of the car and show his hands," Silva told reporters.  "At that point the suspect fires at the officer and the officer is struck."

Silva says Fikes’ partner then opened fire, killing the suspect.

"Our officer who was driving then gets out of the car and is able to discharge his weapon several times and strikes the suspect who was pronounced dead at the scene," she said.

Officer Fikes was struck once in each arm.  He's recovering at Memorial Hermann Hospital.
