Domino’s Pizza founder Tom Monaghan’s suit puts a mandate on hold
Attorney Erin Mersino says the mandate from HHS would have forced Tom Monaghan’s companies to provide contraception coverage to his workers under the new federal health care law. Monaghan is a Roman Catholic and he says that would be against his personal and religious beliefs.
“That’s why we’ve brought the law suit,” Mersino says, “and that’s why we filed for the preliminary injunction, to stop the mandate from forcing him to violate his conscience as well as his religious beliefs.”
Merino expects the Justice Department to appeal the ruling. Employers had until August 1st to comply with the federal mandate for coverage. Merino is a lawyer with the Thomas More Law Center, a conservative Christian group which represents Monaghan.
