State Representative seeks change in wording of Texas law
Maybe it was an oversight.
Four years ago the state legislature approved a bill granting disabled veterans with specialty tags, plus Purple Heart and Medal of Honor recipients, possible free access to the state’s toll roads. The law says qualified veterans “may” have free access.
This week State Representative Abel Herrero is opening hearings to change the language of the bill to read “shall”.
About half the toll roads in Texas do not extend the benefit to qualified veterans. Herrero says he thinks there should be uniformity in the state.
All TxDOT toll roads waive the fee, as do the four tollways operated by the Harris County Toll Road Authority. In Central Texas there are a multitude of governing authorities over several toll roads, some of which apply the benefit and some of which don’t.
Representative Hererro also wants recipients of the Air Force Cross, the Navy Cross, and the Air Force and Army Distinguished Service Cross medals to be included in the program.
