When times are tough, find free deals.

There is a wealth of freebies just a few mouse clicks away.  And not minor stuff.  We’re talking college scholarships, travel, and entertainment, just to name a few.

Andrea Brown is a channel editor for the financial publisher Kiplinger, and makes a living tracking down some of the best deals.  Among her latest tips: freeshipping.org.  Major retailers offer promo codes for discounts on purchases and free shipping.  And for families with kids, you actually can get a free meal at kidsmealdeals.com

Amy Ede manages the website totallyfreestuff.com and says the top three are beauty products, cleaning products, and electronics.

To get free travel, sign up for an airline credit card.  Most offer enough frequent flyer miles when approved that you can get a free flight.

There is a website called freecycle.org that connects members who want to get rid of stuff, for free, with people who want to get used stuff, for free.

And there are free opportunities right in your own backyard.  The Houston Children’s Museum has free admission every Thursday evening from 5-8 pm.  And you can get a free night’s movie rental at Redbox when you like the company’s Facebook page.
