Up to 2500 guard members could be furloughed
The picture becomes clearer at the end of this month. Texas National Guard Colonel Amy Cook says about 10 percent of the state’s National Guard members are considered to be fulltime employees.
“Potentially,” she says, “more than half of those fulltime members could be furloughed.”
Cook says that could degrade maintenance efforts or curtail critical training.
With the guard present in more than 100 Texas communities, local officials are worried, too.
Cook says the Guard will still respond in times of disaster and critical need.
