"Duck Dynasty" rules cable TV

Is TV getting dumber or are we? One of cable's top rated shows is A&E's "Duck Dynasty." The show chronicles a redneck Louisiana family whose wealth makes them seem a bit like a real life "Beverly Hillbillies."

Pop Culture Professor Bob Thompson says two of the top rated shows that are not on the major networks are PBS' highbrow "Downton Abbey" and Duck Dynasty. But you won't get the two confused.

"Put it this way, Duck Dynasty is a whole lot different from Downton Abbey."

But Professor Thompson says we're fascinated by hillbillies.

"I think the reason this show works and has become so popular is the same reason as "Ice Road Truckers" and "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" and that is, it's all about interesting characters."

Professor Thompson says when he was a kid top rated shows featured talking horses and talking cars. So TV has always been silly.
