Providing underage drinkers with alcohol can land you in jail

Fatal car crashes late last year which left five young people dead have now led to a crackdown in Montgomery County.  The District Attorney’s office says people who provide alcohol to underage drinkers in their home can be charged with negligence.  Trying to be a “cool parent” can get you in trouble.

Assistant D.A. Warren Diepraam says the point is to prevent future fatalities.  He says, “Five high school kids killed in two months because of this?  That’s outrageous and we have to do something to stop that.”

The penalty could be severe.  “If a person or business is negligent,” Diepraam says, “and doesn’t check ID, and provides alcohol to anybody under 21, that is a Class A Misdemeanor and somebody could go to jail.”

They could certainly wind up in court.
