Former Harris County Commissioner outdistances her challenger in balloting

Former Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia wins the runoff election to claim the District-6 seat in the Texas Senate, replacing the late Mario Gallegos.

Garcia claimed 53-percent of the vote, while her challenger, State Representative Carol Alvarado, got 47-percent.

Alvarado and Garcia collected the most votes in the January 26 special election, but neither claimed the majority necessary to claim outright victory.

Senate District-6 covers much of the north and east sides of Houston, including Baytown, Galena Park, Pasadena, and South Houston.

Gallegos died last October from complications of liver disease, but still won the November election.
