Two Democrats compete for a vacant seat in the Texas Senate
The polls will remain open until 7pm for the runoff election to fill the unexpired term of late-Senator Mario Gallegos.
State Representative Carol Alvarado and former Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia collected the most votes in the January 26 special election, but neither claimed the majority necessary to claim outright victory.
Gallegos’ Senate District 6 covers much of the north and east sides of Houston, including Baytown, Galena Park, Pasadena, and South Houston.
The late senator died last October from complications of liver disease, but still won the November election.
Voter turnout is expected to be light.
