Barbecue cookoff leaves one group with a sour taste
The Barbecue Cookoff at the Houston Rodeo is tainted by an allegation of racism. Roma Gonzalez and friends had tickets to the "Blarney Bunch and Belles" tent. They had been having a good time for a few hours when they got an unexpected surprise:
"... She asked us, 'what company are you guys from?' And I said, 'Company? Well, we received our tickets." (She responded), 'You don't belong here; your kind doesn't belong here.' And I'm like 'I beg your pardon?!'"
Pedro Gonzalez tells our TV partner Local-2 he was shocked that they were so abruptly ordered to leave,
"I felt bad because my mother was there and I was embarrassed. I just couldn't believe that in 2013 it's still going on."
Rodeo officials are investigating the incident.
A spokesperson for the barbecue group claims Gonzalez and friends improperly received the tickets and insist that race was not an issue.
