Some think media is biased for state’s pro-gun views

Texas enjoys its reputation as a pro-gun state, but some people think the way the state has been portrayed lately is unfair.

Whether it's Piers Morgan of CNN or a piece in the USA Today, it seems like Texans and guns go hand in hand. State Representative Jason Villalba tells KTRH he's not happy about that.

“There are those around the country who do not understand the culture here in Texas and understand how dedicated we are to Second Amendment freedoms,” Villalba said.

James McAbee, the ‘Pistol Packin' Pastor,’ was featured in the USA Today article and said while he thought it was fair, people should realize there are other pro gun states, too.

“South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama are gun states too. But they focused on us. I think it’s just what they hear from everybody,” McAbee said.

Villalba thinks the article was a clear example of a media bias.

“Clearly they had an agenda to have Texas perceived as pro-gun and in a way that is not helpful in the discussion. I thought it was inappropriate,” Villalba said.

McAbee told KTRH he thought the article was fair but that the state's reputation as 'gun crazy' is a bit off base.

“It’s just a piece of protection, like a smoke alarm in a house for others. I think it’s just an unfair view,” McAbee said.
