Remains Less Than One Year Ago

The statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel in Texas is now $3.43, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.  That price is five cents more than one week ago but 20 cents less than the national average which is now $3.63.  Drivers in Dallas and Fort Worth are paying the most on average at $3.47 and drivers in El Paso are paying the least at $3.25.

Since mid-January prices at the pump have been propelled higher by somewhat more expensive crude oil, but more notably by regional refinery issues and the approaching switchover to summer-blend gasoline.  Unlike recent years, escalating geopolitical tensions overseas have not been a major contributing factor to the early-year price increase.  Analysts expect the recent increase will slow as temporary production concerns are addressed.

“Even with the increases in fuel, Texans are still paying two cents less per gallon than what they were paying at this same time last year,” said AAA Texas/New Mexico Representative Doug Shupe.  “We encourage people to carpool, plan errands ahead of time and keep their cars and trucks maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommendations in order to maximize their fuel efficiency.
