Top candidates seek to replace Gallegos in Senate
Election analysts were right; Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia will meet State Rep Carol Alvarado in a runoff election for the District Six Senate seat held by the late Mario Gallegos.
The two emerged from a crowded field of seven candidates. Initial reports from the Harris County Clerk’s office say Garcia claimed 45.4-percent of the vote, while Alvarado got 41.7-percent.

Once the official count is in, Governor Rick Perry will set a date for a runoff election, expected in late February or early March.

Senator Gallegos represented the district, which includes east Houston along with parts of Pasadena, Galena Park and Baytown, since 1994. He died of complications related to liver disease before the November vote, but was elected posthumously.
