Saturday:
The race to fill the unexpired term of late State Senator Mario Gallegos is underway.

Election officials say a crowded field of candidates – along with a forecast of low voter turnout – will virtually assure that no person will receive a majority of votes; a runoff is expected between the top two vote-getters:
- Rodolfo "Rudy" Reyes, Independent
- Dorothy Olmos, Republican
- R.W. Bray, Republican
- Carol Alvarado, Democrat
- Joaquin Martinez, Democrat
- Sylvia R. Garcia, Democrat
- Susan Delgado, Democrat
- Maria Selva, Green Party
Senator Gallegos died from complications associated with his liver disease, but still won the election over Bray, his Republican challenger in November.

Early voting numbers suggest that only about six-percent of registered voters will cast a ballot.
