‘Pistol Packing Pastor’ offers CHL training in Beaumont

Gun dealers aren’t the only ones offering concealed handgun license classes. In Beaumont, you could actually go to church and sign up for free classes from the man they call the ‘Pistol Packing Pastor.’

James McAbee is the Reverend at Lighthouse Worship Center and is offering free CHL classes to all school personnel.

“I’ve got children in school. There are no laws that stopping thugs and criminals from coming into a gun free zone. The only thing that will stop it is someone with a firearm. So I am offering the training free to teachers,” McAbee explained.

He's got one class coming up in February, another in March. His nickname is the ‘Pistol Packing Pastor.’ He got that name after a break in at the church a couple of years ago.

“I did something stupid. I went in with my own gun drawn. It was two teenage boys. I put my firearm up and said, ‘What are you dummies doing? Get out of here,” McAbee said.

He says he never really planned to use his gun on the thugs he confronted.

“I wanted to use a little bit of acting skills. But they took a step towards me and I told them I’d put one in their watermelon,” McAbee explained.

McAbee says he firmly believes you can't bring a knife to a gun fight.

“If I am going to try and protect myself with an umbrella, it’s just not going to work,” McAbee said.

He's been offering training ever since that break-in. He tells KTRH both of his upcoming classes are nearly sold out. They are scheduled for February 2nd and March 2nd.
