Contractors say competitors are hiring illegals to submit low bids
Some say it's a big problem in construction. Competitors hire low wage illegal immigrants and classify them as "subcontractors" so they can submit the lowest bid.
Lisa Givens at the Texas Workforce Commission says they get complaints.
"We audit industries across the board. Certainly construction is one industry that we see a high incidence of misclassification."
Givens says some cases warrant a full investigation.
"Sometimes that can be turned into an audit where we go deeper and ask for information and we're able to identify misclassification."
Givens says the TWC has drawn up proposals for the legislature to handle this kind of fraud, but they're not finalized yet.
