Responds to secession effort
The White House responds to a petition that would allow Texas to secede saying the founding fathers who created the union ``did not provide a right to walk away from it.'' The administration quoted Abraham Lincoln's first inaugural address and a Supreme Court opinion after the Civil War.
The statewide petition so far has gained more than 125,000 signatures. Daniel Miller at the Texas Nationalist Movement calls the White House's response another snub against residents in the Lone Star State.
“The quotes that were placed in there, the logic and reasoning, and I use those terms loosely, shows they put more thought into responding to the petition about 'Death Star' than they did about this one,” Miller tells KTRH News.
“I think it shows a fundamental lack of understanding or an intentional misconstruction of some of the fundamentals of the Union and Constitution,” he says.
However, South Texas College of Law's Gerald Treece disagrees with Miller and his movement, saying the deal to rejoin the Union after the Civil War requires Congressional approval to secede.
Therefore, Treece doesn't expect the Supreme Court to pay any attention to the matter.
